NORDIC COCHRANE CENTRE PRESS RELEASE Brussels, 24 June 2014 EMA's new policy on access to clinical data: About to privatise pharmaceutical knowledge? The proof will be in the pudding The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has made known that its controversial policy on access to clinical data is to be adopted by mid-July 2014. In the aftermath of a public outcry that criticised the reversal of the draft policy proposal, the agency now claims that it will implement a more "user-friendly" system for researchers. Yet, serious concerns remain as other restrictive measures and legal loopholes are left unaddressed.

Generic Entry, Pay-for-Delay Settlements, and the Distribution of Surplus in the US Pharmaceutical Ruben Jacobo-Rubio∗ John L. Turner† Jonathan W. Williams‡ Using an event study approach, and unique data on Paragraph (iv) pharmaceuticalpatent litigation decisions, we estimate that brand firms value deterrence at $4.6 bil-lion on average while generic entrants value the right to enter, on average, at $236.8million. These estimates account for probabilistic district court decisions and an ap-pellate process. In 2002, the Schering-Plough vs. FTC decision led to a surge in"pay-for-delay" settlements. We estimate that surpluses at stake in decided cases are73% lower after this decision, reducing the direct (per-case) consumer surplus gainsanticipated by the 1984 Hatch-Waxman Act's procedures for early generic entry.

Radl(1), Carolina Ianuale(2), Stefania Boccia(2) Background: diabetes is one of the leading causes of death, and has a huge economic impact on the burden of society. Lifestyle interventions such as diet, physical activity and weight reducing are proven to be effective in the prevention of diabetes. To encourage policy actions, data on the cost-effectiveness of such strategies of prevention programmes are needed. MeThods: a systematic review of the literature on the cost-effectiveness of prevention strategies focusing on lifestyle interventions for diabetes type 2 patients. a weighted version of drummond checklist was used to further assess the quality of the included studies. resuLTs: six studies met the inclusion criteria and were therefore considered in this paper. Intensive lifestyle intervention to prevent diabetes type 2 is cost-effective in comparison to other interventions. all studies were judged of medium-to-high quality.concLusIons: policy makers should consider the adoption of a prevention strategy focusing on intensive lifestyle changes because they are proven to be either cost-saving or cost-effective.

INTRODUCTIONA full third of the population needs glasses and contact lenses in order to see things in focus. This is caused by common conditions called myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. The 20th century was the century of many inventions in medicine – this includes the invention of laser refractive surgery, which allowed millions of individuals to get rid of visual aids or at least decrease their use greatly.

Application of Basic Science to Clinical Problems: Traditional vs. Hybrid Problem- Based LearningAmber N. Callis, D.D.S., M.S.; Ann L. McCann, R.D.H., Ph.D.; Emet D. Schneiderman, Ph.D.; William J. Babler, Ph.D.; Ernestine S. Lacy, D.D.S.; David Sidney Hale, D.D.S., M.S.D.Abstract: It is widely acknowledged that clinical problem-solving is a key skill for dental practitioners. The aim of this study was to determine if students in a hybrid problem-based learning curriculum (h-PBL) were better at integrating basic science knowl-edge with clinical cases than students in a traditional, lecture-based curriculum (TC). The performance of TC students (n=40) was compared to that of h-PBL students (n=31). Participants read two clinical scenarios and answered a series of questions regarding each. To control for differences in ability, Dental Admission Test (DAT) Academic Average scores and predental grade point aver-ages (GPAs) were compared, and an ANCOVA was used to adjust for the significant differences in DAT (t-test, p=0.002). Results showed that h-PBL students were better at applying basic science knowledge to a clinical case (ANCOVA, p=0.022) based on overall scores on one case. TC students' overall scores were better than h-PBL students on a separate case; however, it was not statistically significant (p=0.107). The h-PBL students also demonstrated greater skills in the areas of hypothesis generation (Mann-Whitney U, p=0.016) and communication (p=0.006). Basic science comprehension (p=0.01) and neurology (p<0.001) were two areas in which the TC students did score significantly higher than h-PBL students.

Comparison of Approaches toward Formalising Context: Implementation Characteristics and Capacities William Loyola Escuela de Postgrado en Administración de Empresas, Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral, Guayaquil, Ecuador [email protected] Abstract: Existing relevant literature regarding approaches to context formalisation is analysed in search of a characterisation that explains the links - suggested by knowledge theory of the firm - between knowledge integration capability and common knowledge types. The ontological and the syntactic-semantic-pragmatic continuum approaches reveal an extensive description of context, which contributes to the understanding of the knowledge integration process, and to an eventual operationalisation of common knowledge types. This theoretical development opens possibilities for the elaboration of prescriptive models that support the integration of knowledge during routine operations of the organisation. Keywords: knowledge integration, common knowledge, context formalisation 1. Common knowledge in

Brown© 2011 Earth Policy Institute We need an economy for the twenty-first century, onethat is in sync with the earth and its natural support sys-tems, not one that is destroying them. The fossil fuel-based, automobile-centered, throwaway economy thatevolved in western industrial societies is no longer aviable model—not for the countries that shaped it or forthose that are emulating them. In short, we need to builda new economy, one powered with carbon-free sources ofenergy—wind, solar, and geothermal—one that has adiversified transport system and that reuses and recycleseverything.

The Right to Parenthood An Argument for a Narrow Interpretation1 ABSTRACTThe paper argues for two kinds of limitations on the right to parenthood. First, it claims that the right to parenthooddoes not entail a right to have as many children as one desires. This conclusion follows from the standard justificationsfor the right to parenthood, none of which establishes the need to grant special protection to having as many childrenas one desires. Second, with respect to the right to receive assistance from the state in IVF, it is suggested that the stateshould also be allowed to take non-medical considerations into account in determining whether or not an applicant isentitled to this service, particularly in cases where the applicant seems to lack mothering ability.

Oxidative stress as pathogenesis of cardiovascular risk associated with metabolic syndrome

ANTIOXIDANTS & REDOX SIGNALINGVolume 15, Number 7, 2011 FORUM REVIEW ARTICLE ª Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.DOI: 10.1089/ars.2010.3739 Oxidative Stress as Pathogenesis of Cardiovascular Risk Associated with Metabolic Syndrome Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is characterized by accumulation of visceral fat associated with the clustering ofmetabolic and pathophysiological cardiovascular risk factors: impaired glucose tolerance, dyslipidemia, andhypertension. Although the definition of MetS is different among countries, visceral obesity is an indispensablecomponent of MetS. A growing body of evidence suggests that increased oxidative stress to adipocytes is centralto the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease in MetS. Increased oxidative stress to adipocytes causes dysre-gulated expression of inflammation-related adipocytokines in MetS, which contributes to obesity-associatedvasculopathy and cardiovascular risk primarily through endothelial dysfunction. The purpose of present reviewis to unravel the mechanistic link between oxidative stress and cardiovascular risk in MetS, focusing on insulinresistance, hypertension, and atherosclerosis. Then, therapeutic opportunities translated from the bench tobedside will be provided to develop novel strategies to cardiovascular risk factors in MetS. Antioxid. RedoxSignal. 15, 1911–1926.
