DIABETES PEPTIDES Peptides and Diabetes PEPTIDES FOR DIABETES RESEARCH According to data from the International Diabetes Federa-tion, more than 250 million people around the world suf-fer from diabetes mellitus, a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia. Diabetes mellitus can be divided into two main types, type 1 or insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) and type 2, or non insulin-depen-dent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). The absolute lack of insu-lin, due to destruction of the insulin producing pancreatic β-cells, is the particular disorder in type 1 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is mainly characterized by the inability of cells to respond to insulin. The condition affects mostly the cells of muscle and fat tissue, and results in a condition known as „insulin resistance".

Determination of Quantal Dose-Response Characteristics in Phenotypic Assays using Supervised Classification Daniel Asarnow1, and Rahul Singh1* 1Department of Computer Science, San Francisco State University *Corresponding author R. Singh, [email protected] Abstract We have designed and implemented a fully automatic, high-throughput screen against the causative parasite of the devastating illness, schistosomiasis, using computer vision and machine learning. The computer vision component segments (individually recognizes and delineates) schistosomula in bright-field micrographs, including touching and partially overlapping parasites. A learning model employing support vector machines to identify schistosomula which differ significantly from controls. Classification is performed in a high-dimensional feature space, the dimensions of which correspond to measurements of appearance, shape and texture. Because variation between different populations of schistosomula unavoidably creates different baselines for different experiments, classification is conducted in two stages: one in which putatively "normal" parasites are identified within each control image and used to derive an estimated control centroid, and one in which all parasites are classified as "normal" or "degenerate" on the basis of tuples composed of a given parasite's feature vector and corresponding control centroid. Finally, a continuous measurement of the phenotypic response to a particular experimental condition (such as the concentration of a certain drug) is produced using the notion of quantal response, or the proportion of individuals which differ from controls in a particular subpopulation. The learning model is demonstrated to be highly effective, and for test data has an accuracy of 0.89. Dose-response curves produced for four compounds (fluvastatin, niclosamide, praziquantel and simvastatin) with the automated method are also tightly correlated to those produced by human experts, with high statistical significance. Correlation values are > 0.97 in all cases with p-values << 10-3.

El pontífice argentino, que fue profusamente ovacionado por los miles de periodistas presentes durante el Cónclave, explicó que San Francisco de Asís, el santo en el que se inspiró, era "el hombre de la pobreza, el hombre de la paz". "El hombre pobre, como yo querría una iglesia pobre y para los pobres", agregó el Papa, que en estos días ha sorprendido al mundo por su mensaje en favor de volver a la esencia del cristianismo. Jorge Mario Bergoglio nació en Buenos Aires el 17 de diciembre de 1936, por lo que cumplirá 77 años antes de que finalice 2013. Estudió y se graduó como técnico químico, pero eligió el sacerdocio. Licenciado en Filosofía, completó su formación en Chile, donde estudió Humanidades. Entre 1964 y 1965 fue profesor de Literatura y Psicología, para posteriormente decantarse por la Teología. Fue ordenado sacerdote el 13 de diciembre de 1969. Veintitrés años después, Juan Pablo II lo nombró obispo titular de Auca y auxiliar de Buenos Aires. En febrero de 2001, le convirtió en cardenal. Coincidiendo con la mayor fiesta del cristianismo y ante cerca de 250.000 fieles de todo el mundo congregados en la plaza de San Pedro del Vaticano, el Papa latinoamericano pidió a los católicos que transformen "la muerte en vida, el odio en amor, la venganza en perdón, la guerra en paz". El Papa evitó mencionar específicamente los problemas de América Latina, su región, aunque condenó muchos de los males que la azotan, entre ellos el tráfico de droga y de personas. "Paz a todo el mundo, aún tan dividido por la codicia", clamó el papa latinoamericano antes de denunciar "la violencia ligada al tráfico de la droga y la explotación inicua de los recursos naturales", así como la "trata de personas, la mayor esclavitud del siglo XXI", recalcó. Advance Access Publication 19 April 2006 eCAM 2006;3(3)373–377 Evaluating Effects of Aromatherapy Massage on Sleep in Childrenwith Autism: A Pilot Study School of Psychology, University of Reading and Berkshire Healthcare NHS Trust, UK Previous studies have found beneficial effects of aromatherapy massage for agitation in people withdementia, for pain relief and for poor sleep. Children with autism often have sleep difficulties, and itwas thought that aromatherapy massage might enable more rapid sleep onset, less sleep disruptionand longer sleep duration. Twelve children with autism and learning difficulties (2 girls and 10 boysaged between 12 years 2 months to 15 years 7 months) in a residential school participated in a withinsubjects repeated measures design: 3 nights when the children were given aromatherapy massage withlavender oil were compared with 14 nights when it was not given. The children were checked every30 min throughout the night to determine the time taken for the children to settle to sleep, the numberof awakenings and the sleep duration. One boy's data were not analyzed owing to lengthy absence.Repeated measures analysis revealed no differences in any of the sleep measures between the nightswhen the children were given aromatherapy massage and nights when the children were not givenaromatherapy massage. The results suggest that the use of aromatherapy massage with lavender oilhas no beneficial effect on the sleep patterns of children with autism attending a residential school.It is possible that there are greater effects in the home environment or with longer-term interventions.

Fellow patients already treated in adult care (hereafter referred to as ‘buddies')organise the day-to-day program, run the camp, counsel the attendees, and also participate in the activities. This study aimed to explore the effects of thisspecific form of peer-to-peer support on the self-management of young people (16–25 years) with ESRD whoparticipated in Camp COOL (CC) (hereafter referred to as ‘participants').Methods: A mixed methods research design was employed.
